On June 20, 2000, the band released their third studio album, White Pony. In September 2004 the album had sold 872,006 copies. In 1999, it became a gold record after selling 500,000 copies in the United States. Two years later, "My Own Summer (Shove It)" was cast on the soundtrack of The Matrix. Another collaboration on the album was that of Annalynn, Cunningham's wife, who did the female backing vocals on "Mx." "My Own Summer (Shove It)" and "Be Quiet and Drive (Far Away)" were hits on the alternative circuit. The song inspired to Cavalera to create Soulfly, a band dedicated to Wells. Released 28 of October of 1997, the album had the collaboration of the singer Max Cavalera (founder and leader of Sepultura ) in Headup, "a tribute to his late stepson Dana Wells. Ī review of Adrenaline remarked Cunningham as a "surprisingly sophisticated drummer" and added that "unlike many of their contemporary, the Deftones are controlled even in the midst of chaos" Around the Fur (1997–1999)Īround the Fur was again produced by Terry Date and was recorded at Studio X in Seattle. When Adrenaline sales were reaching 200,000 copies, fans were already waiting for their second album, Around The Fur, which was released in October 1997. The album was not an immediate success, so the band became a fan base playing in small venues or as opening act for groups like Ozzy Osbourne, L7. The band adopted his style and had him as a producer for their next three albums.Īdrenaline was released on October 3, 1995. Date contributed several ideas to improve the sound structure. The producer chosen to lead the sessions was Terry Date, who at the time was well known for having produced albums for Pantera, White Zombie, and Soundgarden. Pre-production of Deftones' first own work began in the fall of 1994. A 13-song demo called (Like) Linus, is the only thing they had before signing to Maverick Records. Although the group initially relied heavily on heavy metal, in the early 90's they took their sound a little further inspired by bands like Duran Duran, The Cure etc.

The driver is reported to have paid Carpenter a cash settlement that allowed the band to purchase equipment, but drummer Abe Cunningham commented in an interview that this was "a myth about how our band started". It was at this point that he started playing guitar, listening to bands like Anthrax, Stormtroopers of Death, and Metallica. This left him confined to a wheelchair for several months. When Carpenter was 15 years old, he was hit by a car while skateboarding. The group was formed in Sacramento in 1988 when high school students Stephen Carpenter, Abraham Cunningham, and Camilo "Chino" Moreno began playing together. The band's seventh studio album, Koi No Yokan, was announced in September 2012, but did not go on sale until 2013 due to the death of Chi Cheng, who had spent several years in a coma, with the song as its first single. Deftones' sixth album, Diamond Eyes, was released on May 4, 2010. The self-titled album Deftones was released in 2003 and in 2006 the Californian band released their fifth studio album, Saturday Night Wrist, which reached 10th on the US charts. After the album's release, Maverick Records released a single titled " Back to School (Mini Maggit), " which was a rap- influenced reinterpretation of White Pony's closing track, "Pink Maggit," and included it on a reissue of the album. Their third album, White Pony, continued the commercial and critical success story with third place. The album included the single " My Own Summer (Shove It) ", which also appeared on the original soundtrack of The Matrix in 1999. Around the Fur, their second studio album, also entered the US and UK charts for the first time. The band released their first studio album, Adrenaline, in 1995 through Maverick Records, and debuted at # 23 on the Billboard Top Heatseekers chart. The band has a gold record and three platinum records.
